Martina McBride kicked off the first show in her new "Love Unleashed" tour on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Black River Colesium in Poplar Bluff, MO. The night started with a solo performance by Hailey Whitters, who released her debut album "Black Sheep" one year ago. She was followed by the Canadian Country duo High Valley who have won numerous awards for their music in Canada and will be releasing their fifth album "Dear Life" in November.
Martina's set started with a video discussing how she developed the "Love Unleashed" tour and the need for more love in the world rather than all of the negativity that we seem to see every day. Her goal is that everyone spend the two hours at her show and leave all that negativity at the door. She wants you to have a fun and memorable experience.
As always Martina's soaring voice belted out hit after hit from her entire career and you could tell that she put her heart and soul into every song and left nothing on the stage. I loved her harmonica work on "Love's the Only House" and her piano solo on "In My Daughter's Eyes." I'm pretty sure she sang songs from 12 of her 13 studio albums, with her Christmas album being the only one omitted (maybe she will include a song or two from it in some December stops?) She engaged the crowd on numerous occasssions, even taking a break between songs to help a man propose to his girlfriend in front of the stage. Another touching moment was when she knelt down on the front of the stage to sing a part of "This One's for the Girls" to a disabled girl in a wheelchair. She sang a three song set from her album "Timeless" which is one of my favorites because I grew up listening to so many of the classics on that album. I am especially hooked on her rendition of Lynn Anderson's classic " I Never Promised You a Rose Garden." Being that she wants to unleash the love to her concert goers, the last song in her encore set was a Beatles classic, "All You Need is Love." Tremendous show, that comes highly recommended from me. I've seen her in concert three times now and I'll be back again for more when she is close to home.
